The Smith Machine is a pressing /squatting machine which has an Olympic bar that moves up and down on a vertical guide rod track both with and without a counterbalance based on the model. This was designed to be used for a safer partial training by the Godfather of Fitness, Jack Lalanne. When used properly a smith machine is a great way to allow for lifting heavy weights without the need for a spotter. However, if you do calf raises, rack pulls, bench pressing with an adjustable bench you will be hard pressed to find a better piece of fitness equipment for it.
