An indoor rower / rowing machine, is used to simulate the action of watercraft rowing for the purpose of exercise or competitive training. Most brands like Concept 2 utilize a resistance systems that uses the air. Other brands like WaterRower utilize actual water to emulate more accurately the feel of on-water rowing and are the first choice for Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey’s role on the popular Netflix series House of Cards). Other interpretations came from brands like Bladez, which use magnetic resistance technology for a smoother workout.

Rowing is for the athlete, Crossfitter, or fitness enthusiast who is looking for a great low impact, aerobic, total body workout. Rowing has all those benefits and more all contained in a small footprint. For example, did you know that when using proper rowing technique a person can burn 2-3 times the amount of calories compared to indoor cycling?

When you row with correct posture, you are engaging your core better than any other exercise. As you may already know our major muscle groups are concentrated in our core. Have lower back pain from sitting at your desk? Improve your posture. Neck pain from staring at your computer for too many hours? Improve your posture. Hip issues? Improve your posture. How do you improve your posture you ask? Simple, have a stronger core. What is the best way to build a stronger core, faster, more efficiently than any other exercise? Crunches, are NOT the answer so you can now say Good Bye to them forever! Rowing is the answer!!

Unlike indoor cycling where you only have resistance in one direction, rowing is a full body exercise. Rowing has resistance in two directions, backwards when you start the “row” and then in the opposite direction when you return to the starting position. The key is inthe sliding seat. Your legs compress and extend with every stroke. In addition to the more obvious work being done by the back and arms, you get the benefit of a fantastic cardio workout! One that works your core, your arms and legs. There is a reason that college rowers look like they are Abercrombie models.

If you are looking to keep in shape, lose weight, cross-train for another sport, practice your form in the winter months before you can get back on the water, rehab from an injury or surgery then a rower is a great way to achieve your fitness goals.

Rowing is such a great exercise in so many different ways.

  • Low-impact (easy on the knees and ankles)
  • High calorie burner (because it uses so many muscle groups)
  • Great for joint health (joints move through a wide range of motion)
  • Upper body (completes the stroke)
  • Lower body (the legs initiate the drive)
  • Works the back and abs too!
  • Superb aerobic fitness (great for cardiovascular fitness)
  • Relieves Stress (for overall health and well-being)
